Brain Research

Under the title „Meeting of Minds“ the Belgian King Baudouin Foundation and the European Commission initiated a European-wide public dialogue on brain research (“European Citizen Deliberation on Brain Science”). With eleven international partner institutions 126 participants from nine European countries discussed current and developments and issues such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), medical imaging or human brain enhancement.

In national citizens’ conferences the participants formulated questions they considered important, discussed these with experts from medicine, science, politics and public administration. In two European-wide conferences the results from the national conferences were summarized and consolidated into recommendations for the European Commission and its future research strategy. The purpose was to give Europeans the possibility to co-decide about the use of common research funds.

On behalf of the Risk Dialogue FoundationDr. Antje Grobe and Milena Riede moderated the German citizens’ conferences, as well as the German country groups in the following Brussels events. Project partner here was the Deutsche Hygiene Museum in Dresden, which accompanied the conferences by a special exhibition and provided special rooms for the conferences there.

The citizen’s recommendations were handed to Commission representatives, regulatory bodies and scientists in January 2006.
